Thirteen families from Norrbotten have broken away from the growth-oriented society and left cities and larger villages to establish a small community, a cooperative settlement in the wilderness, based on self-sufficiency, simple living, and an uncompromising love for creation. For the community’s upcoming anniversary celebration, members of other similar groups have been invited—those who sympathize with the idea that the well-being of the land should always take precedence over human interests. Are you one of them?
The revival performance Degrowth (Avväxten) is based on poet David Väyrynen’s forthcoming poetry collection of the same name, a book consisting of a single long sermon delivered at the gathering that concludes the anniversary week of the village community Storberget/Isovaara/Stuorváris. The performance is an attempt to reconstruct that gathering in order to further spread the community’s message: if the Earth is to continue bearing humanity, humanity must place considerably less weight upon its shoulders.
To convey the power and potential of this movement, David Väyrynen and ensemble employ poetry, theatre, communal singing, and specially composed music. The performance concludes with an invitation for anyone interested to join the coffee table discussion and continue the conversation about the survival of the land.
