A seminar day filled with inspiration and knowledge

Welcome to a seminar where you have the opportunity to delve into the rich architectural tradition of farms in Norrbotten and Ostrobothnia, and discover the fascinating role of wallpaper in our homes throughout history.

The day begins with two lectures. Erica Duvensjö from Norrbotten Museum will talk about the architectural features of Norrbotten farmhouses. Matti Mäkelä from Helsinki University, Ruralia Institute, will talk about Ostrobothnian farmhouses. We will round off the morning with a discussion on the similarities and differences between these building traditions.

After a joint lunch break, we continue with a screening of the film “Wallpaper – a Part of the House’s History,” produced by Norrbotten Museum and Älvsby Folkhögskola. Following this, we will listen to building conservator Taina Hautamäki, who will talk about Finland as a major wallpaper producer around the turn of the 20th century.

The day concludes with Elina Wirkkala from Wirkkala Wallpaper. Elina will share how new wallpapers are created based on old patterns.
