Glacial Archaeology in Sápmi

Thu 23 Oct kl 13:00 - 15:00

Nygrensvägen 28. Älvsby Folkhögskola

What can melting ice tell us about our history?

Archaeologists Hanna Larsson and Lars Backman from the Norrbotten Museum share insights from their work within the research project Glacial Archaeology in Sápmi (GLAS). The lecture offers a glimpse into a growing field of research that is emerging as climate change reveals traces of the past.

For four years, researchers and museums have collaborated in the GLAS project to explore glaciers and snow patches in the high alpine areas of Swedish Sápmi. Norrbotten Museum has been responsible for surveys in the municipalities of Kiruna and Gällivare. The final field surveys were completed in 2024, and the work now continues with compiling results, dating finds, and preparing publications. At the same time, discussions are ongoing about the future of similar collaborations.

Hanna and Lars will talk about the surveys in Kiruna and Gällivare municipalities, the finds made by the different partners—which are now being analyzed—and discuss glacial archaeology as a method and its future potential.

The GLAS research project was a four-year initiative funded by the Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg Memorial Fund. Project partners included: the Archaeological Research Laboratory at Stockholm University (project owner), Jamtli, the Silver Museum/INSARC, Ájtte Swedish Mountain and Sámi Museum, Norrbotten Museum, and Västerbotten Museum.
