VOICES/ROOTS is a poetry performance in the style of folk ballads that explores heritage, environment, belonging, and women’s history. Josefin Şîlan takes us on a journey through time and space, from the shores of the Pite River to the snow-covered mountains of Kurdistan.

She creates unique soundscapes using a loop station, blending voice, sound, and song with various instruments in a distinctive way. Over these soundscapes, the poems flow gently and melodically, attempting to connect with those who came before and give voice to their stories.

Josefin Şîlan Karlsson is a multi-award-winning performance poet, artist, and social educator based in Vidsel, Norrbotten. Working with spoken word and written poetry as her foundation, she creates stage performances, art, literature, and social connections, both in her own and collaborative projects and processes.

The performance is mainly in Swedish but also includes elements in Pite dialect and Kurdish (Kurmanji).

The event is free and part of the celebration of Älvsbyn Municipality’s 150th anniversary. More information about the celebration and other events can be found here: https://www.alvsbyn.se/…/evenemang/alvsbyns-kommun-150-ar/
