It’s time for this year’s Big Band concert!
Once upon a time, the Norrbotten Big Band was a military band, located in Boden, with the primary task of playing fanfares when commanders had affairs in the area. But then conductor, composer, and arranger Örjan Fahlström took over leadership, and the early 1980s became the turning point for the Norrbotten Big Band.
Challenging music was now written for the orchestra, a strict rehearsal schedule was established, and pressure was placed on the musicians to ensure high-level presence and performance. Suddenly, a powerful big band emerged, putting Norrland on Sweden’s musical map!
“It was an incredibly rewarding time. I saw great potential in the orchestra, with so many young musicians and promising soloists who were hungry for new music. Later, we moved to Luleå and had the chance to reach a larger audience. We ended up sharing the same facilities as Norrbotten Theatre, and a fantastic period began,” says Örjan Fahlström.
The band continued to thrive, and the next person at the podium was the American trumpeter Tim Hagans. The year was 1996, and the world opened up for the band. Tours in the USA were organized, and renowned guests joined the band. Hagans shares from the USA:
“My biggest goal was to bring Norrbotten Big Band’s music beyond Sweden’s borders. I enjoyed every moment with these incredible musicians, both on and off stage. Meeting the smiling, knowledgeable audience was also a delight. Their appreciation and enthusiasm were truly inspiring. Producer Mirka Siwek was also a key figure for many years; without her, it would never have become what it was. It was all a magnificent experience.”
Now, Fahlström and Hagans will once again compose pieces for the band. We dare to promise exciting music at an extremely high level. And if we’re really lucky, we might also get to enjoy them both as instrumentalists on stage as well. At least, that’s the rumor!
